Maaji launched their new Chimeric Wayfarer collection last week so I went to check it out. At the event we were given a treasure map where X marked the spot of different fun activities to participate in during the evening. Guests could stop by the TOY nail bar to try out the Maaji colours before heading to get their hair done, then they'd snap some pics by the Nifty 250 photobooth and lastly, would take a look at the swimwear. I loved the flamingo print on one of the bikinis and the jewel tones on the models were really beautiful. I suddenly felt a bit under the weather during the event so I couldn't stay as long as I would have liked to but it was lovely nevertheless. I've been keeping to myself. I feel fragile lately, like I'm about to fall into a trap or am still recovering from climbing out of one. I'm more of a detective these days, observing from afar and making connections with clues. It's a mess on the inside. Sometimes we have to remind ourselves that it's ok not to be doing what everyone else is doing. I decline last-minute requests that used to excite me because they seem harsh and noisy now. It's ok to be a little quiet. I just didn't remember what it felt like at first.
Finding myself on the sticky bathroom floor after fainting. All I could think was that I was going to die and I had no idea why the life was draining out of me. Three kind women helped me. We stood there while I drank a soda, this beautiful gathering of three different cultures and contrasting skin tones, and my heart felt warm again. People are kind and good but sometimes you only see it when you're really in trouble. I'll come out of hiding today knowing that I can crawl into bed on Sunday or sink beneath the water of a bubble bath soon enough, retreating into my own little world.
Magnum recently launched two new flavours and threw a lavish event at Shimmy Beach Club complete with manicures, cocktails, a cook off, an infinite supply of ice cream and my perennial favorite feature at these fancy things, an instant photobooth. We all had to wear pink or black so it's a pity that I only dyed my hair fuschia again this week...ah, fashion girl problems. I don't know about you but as far as I'm concerned, there are never enough ice cream flavours so Magnum Pink (Pomegranate) and Black (Espresso) are welcome additions to the world of frozen lactose goodness. The way I see it, a coffee flavoured ice cream is the fastest way to get over a break up, a couple of those and you'll be bouncing off the walls instead of crying in your pajamas.
There was a cook off held between culinary schools which were each joined by a celebrity and this saw radio personality Gareth Cliff trying to get the ice cream into a mixing bowl by banging it on the side but pretty soon he gave up and just ate it. Sounds like every day in my kitchen. I always say, why add chocolate chips to my cupcake batter when I can just eat them? In fact, why even bake the cupcakes when I can just eat the batter? Exactly. I'm delighted to find out that Kamini won Masterchef as I've been living under a rock. I remember chatting with her a few months ago and she told me that they had to keep the results a secret so if you're looking for a secret keeper, look no further as those are some skills. All the celebrities in attendance made me feel like I was in a reality show of some sort where I might have to compete with former Miss South Africas to eat as much ice cream as possible. Listen Cindy Nel, we all know who's going to win this one.
But seriously it was a fantastic event where we got to preview how South Africa's first twitter auction will work. The actual auction will take place on the 23rd of November so follow Magnum on Twitter or Facebook for more info on how to take part. Thanks to PR Company Marcus Brewster for an awesome event and cute box of goodies. I'll be right back, all this talk about Magnums is about to send me to the fridge.
Nail Candi nail jewels and accessories.
Yay! Finally an awesome local brand that has an array of nail rings and jewels for you to go mad with. As of writing this, my bow has lasted almost 2 weeks already (I think you can tell by the exposed cuticle hehe) and it's re-useable so you really get your money's worth. After applying a jewel with nail glue, add a clear top coat to secure it. Voila, fun nail bling! Super kawaii. Check out the selection at Nailcandi.co.za to order.
Revlon Nail Art Moon Candy.
I was so excited to try these that I had to stop myself from buying them all. The two-in-one product comes with a chic nail varnish and a complimentary iridescent topcoat. In this case I just tried out the confetti topcoats and one of my favorites was 220 - Milky Way, seen on my pinkies. The shiny particles are multicoloured and I found it the densest with glitz. 210 - Galactic is also a winner for blue shimmer. Since I did a few dips, I was worried that it would dry slowly and be super goopy but it dried quick; I didn't have that problem so many other glitter polishes gave me where they never seemed to set. You can find them at any Clicks now, with a recommended selling price of R89,95.
Candi the manicurist!
Candice Watson at Cape Town's Dante Express is a genius. She's hands down (excuse the pun), the best nail artist in Cape Town and I swear by her. Her mini masterpieces last the two week recommended time between manicures and in one case when I couldn't see her, they were still perfect by week three! Candice is open to ideas but I leave a lot of them to her because girl knows what she's skilled with. Nail art works best with fakes because there's more space to work with so I have acrylics on at the moment. Book an appointment with her at this number 021 433 0798 and ask for a nail art manicure with Candice. Check out my instagram to see all of her creations.
So the 411 is that the boutique is owned by two charming Brazilian sisters who checked out my new pink hair (flamingo is taking over my life) and told me that they offer crazy colours with Tint Hair Chalk in their treatment rooms. It's great to get some South American flair up in here and I was reminded that summer is not too far away so I better put away the Pringles. Pssh let's just be real and hide them. A friend of mine just asked me where to find suspender belts and now I have her answer. For your pretty lingerie and bikini needs, check out the store next to Beefcakes in Green Point and then get a mani like a boss.

Now with Minx, nails kits, Shellac, stickers, magnetic nail polish and Kawaii nail images making the rounds on the internet, nails have never had such a vast array of options. It's like the 20s for flappers except for nails - only, I still think a corset nail would be amazing and flappers threw their girdles in fires and drove away on motorcycles. Don't quote me on that. Oh actually you can, I just googled "flappers on motorcycles" - it's legit. Since we're talking nails, we have to talk rings to set the look off. I quite like the idea of having crazy nails and pairing them with less busy jewelry, ghetto nails with a classic twist. I'm into it. So which nail trends are you favorite? I think the velvet ones are amazing! Oh I am a total Trent Reznor fan if you were wondering, And All That Could Have Been was my spirit animal in high school.
