Last week I checked out the FEDISA Markham Menswear Fashion Flash and it was such a treat. Markham's provided a brief to the college and students were then assembled into dynamic teams and asked to choose from one of four themes: Nautical, Tribe, Bleached Beach and Jungle. After collaborating on designs, moodboards, sketches and fabric choices together, each student then made a garment which would make up the range for each team. I saw a lot of nautical at fashion week and to be honest, was getting tired of this trend being perennially pushed. Enter young creatives for a breath of fresh sea air! Thank you for helping me to enjoy maritime threads again, FEDISA.
Tie dye and pastels were gorgeous, denim was crisp, prints were exciting and the details were amazing. From newspaper print textiles lining jackets to creative patch pockets....details slay me. Let's not even get into accessories because the bags were a delight. It's the small things sometimes; the extras that really anchor a look. Each student also created more avant garde pieces to echo their concept featuring self-made prints, macramé and re-fabrication. The texture in those outfits were amazing. I loved so many of the garments that I wanted to share every single one so do check out Facebook for more. It's refreshing to see students focus heavily on menswear ergo I'm proud of this institution for offering such a comprehensive fashion education. Raya and I dreamed of returning there to study at their beautiful campus. Well done to the students for their impeccable work. Another feather in your cap, FEDISA.

I recently stumbed upon some images from Dora Abodi's Spring Summer 2013 Collection and now I'm a huge fan of this European designer. Her collection titled "The Golden Child" was inspired by Transilvanian folk patterns. These vibrant prints are coupled with glistening metallics and ornate accessories as well as bubblegum leather items punched with eyelets and crafted with cut-outs.
Last week was the Say Hello to Summer Traffic Clothing Summer Fashion Show which presented what's available in store this summer. Leigh-Anne Williams was the charismatic MC while we watched the models saunter down the runway in Traffic's take on the neon, nautical, denim, swimwear, monochromatic and tropical trends.
Tart was light and cute featuring v necklines, bright dresses, a few fun prints and some cool velvet shorts. Models gleefully threw their clutches to the guests at the end of the show. You can view the entire collection on Facebook!
On day 3 of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Cape Town, Michelle Ludek presented a comfortable ready-to-wear collection of neon brights and citrus hues. Great get-ups for post-beach sundowners. I loved the lace molding and warrior-worthy gold accessories. Phew that's a lot of hyphens haha! You can check out more pics on Facebook.
I just had a growth spurt, making clothes from scratch with no help really catapults you into independence. I believe in my designs and I believe in what I have to offer the world of fashion. My history lecturer adored my designs, he told me after the presentation we all gave so I thought I was going to get in the show but I didn't. The annual fashion show is the big deal every year but it's mainly to showcase the 3rd years. It's a blessing in disguise because it will give me time to recharge for 3rd year. I think I might have done better if I put volume into my garments because they picked avant garde pleated white and denim designs. But I didn't want to go that direction because I wanted to do something sleek and fitted as I had never gotten the chance before.
I've had a rough couple of weeks but it's all finally finished and I have some time on my hands. I think facials, massages, manicures and pedicures are in order as well as hair even though it was just done, I'm just interested in living, grooming, doing things for myself instead of sitting behind a machine all day, it got a bit too intense at the end. I want to sleep a full nights sleep again and then go out all night. Summer is coming soon and every Christmas holiday is an ongoing pool party that feels like Los Angeles. x
