The little black dress of poetry

Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

I remember once telling a poetry snob that my favortie poem was Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening by Robert Frost. "How pedestrian, that's like high school English 101" they replied. Not everything that is well-known or popular is automatically lame, angsty teen. In any case, I still adore the poem for many reasons. Sometimes less is more, you don't need to produce a complex and verbose work to be good. If you can do something simple really well, it creates that much more of an impact.

Before things got so busy and fast-paced in my life it used to be about chaos, dreams and going with the flow. I love the contentment that comes with having free time; there's always some fun I want to have, some idea I need to write down, a new album to listen to or a new conversation to have. I'm tired of putting my passion on hold in the name of obligations, passion never belongs on the backburner; I'm just terrible at multi-tasking.

I love sewing, creating, coming up with ideas and concepts, I hate deadlines, rigid rules and instructions. I know I would make something crazy amazing with more time on my hands, I would slowly develop my clothing, embellishing and treating it with some serious TLC. I'm thinking of taking another gap year when I'm finished, I took one after high school and it was one of the best decisions I've ever made. If you're at a point in your life where you want to follow your heart and do something - don't listen to negative Nancys telling you why it's a bad idea. Do it. Don't underestimate the importance of freedom, freedom to do what you want, when you want and with who you want.

Don't be taken for a ride. Ask questions, be vigilant, read the fine print, the system does not look out for you so you have to look out for yourself. People will always try to get something out of you so be unpredictable, bluff when necessary and never let anyone manipulate you or tell you what to do because only you know what you want.

Above all, trust your heart, always. x
