Nicholas Coutts' winning collection
On Thursday the winner of Elle's fantastic Rising Star Award design competition was announced after all of the finalists showed their collections. Congratulations to Nicholas Coutts! South Africa is spoiled for talent, that's for sure. I was head over heels for Mieke Vermeulen's Neo-Voortrekker collection as the details on her sleeves were unbelievable and her cohesive styling was a delight. Speaking of cohesion, the winner's textures were a cosy treat and his Strength vs Fragility theme was beautifully executed with clean silhouettes breaking for frills and luxe scarves.
Last year's winner Jane Elizabeth Kotze closed the show and I can see exactly why her hand-sewn details, splashes of sequins and interesting layering in soft hues wowed the crowd. Unfortunately I was seated too far away for great photos but I don't think there's been a more exciting time for SA fashion than right now.
